A Taste of History

March Seniors Luncheon
This month's luncheon was a great time, as always. We had sandwiches—always a favorite—along with some delicious side dishes, including deviled eggs. But the real highlight of the afternoon was our special guest, Melissa Wilcox.
Melissa grew up in Barberton and has become an expert in the city's history. What started as a simple postcard collection has grown into a vast assortment of memorabilia, including a massive 1945 phone book. That book wasn’t just phone numbers—it listed family members and even their workplaces. Back in the day, people kept their phone books in their kitchen drawer, close to the wall-mounted phone. Seeing all these historical artifacts brought back memories for many of us.
This was actually Melissa’s second time sharing with us—her first visit was in 2017. This time, she focused on entertainment and family-run businesses in Barberton. After her presentation, she opened the floor to questions. People asked about restaurants and their menus from years past, and since she had eaten at many of those places herself, she had great answers. The Q&A lasted almost 20 minutes—it was that engaging!
Of course, no luncheon would be complete without Dan Miner’s quiz. He always comes up with a fun challenge based on the theme of the day. This time, the quiz involved hidden books of the Bible within a paragraph, making it extra tricky! No prizes—just bragging rights.
Looking ahead, we’ve got a Barbershop quartet lined up for our ice cream social in June, and exciting plans for April. Hope to see you there!
