Finding God at Middle School Camp

Wildside 2025

This summer, I had the privilege of being part of Wild Side, our middle school camp at Round Lake Christian Camp in Lakeville, Ohio. It’s designed just for fifth to eighth graders—a full week of spiritual growth, high-energy worship, and plenty of fun. From Devotion time to water slides, dodgeball tournaments, and Color Wars, the week was packed with connection and excitement.

The theme this year was identity. Our speaker walked students through six “I am” statements, like “I am loved,” “I am chosen,” and “I have a purpose.” Each day during Devotion groups, we dug deeper into these truths. I led the boys, while Beth Kincaid led the girls. Identity is such a big deal at that age—figuring out who you are and who gets to define you. We challenged students to stop listening to the world’s labels—like “not good enough,” “ugly,” or “too quiet”—and to trust what God says about them instead.

One powerful moment happened on “20-Minute Night.” After a message about labels, students were sent to spend 20 silent minutes with God. Because of a storm, we stayed indoors—but then the power went out. In silence, in darkness, not one student panicked. That moment of stillness turned sacred, and afterward, many opened up about the identities they'd been carrying—some for years. It was raw, emotional, and deeply moving. That night, many had their “come to Jesus” moment.

Two students joined us less than 24 hours before camp started. One of them, Michael, had never been to church before. Watching him feel welcomed and open up spiritually was a highlight for me. That’s God at work.
