When Preschoolers Became Artists

Preschool Art Show

Yearly, we have an art exhibit for families to see what the children have made.  We spend a week learning about the kind of art that they will be making.  This past spring, we did something a little different for our preschoolers. Usually, we take the kids on an imaginative journey—outer space, Disneyland, or even through the human body. This time, thanks to April Bradford's creative thinking, we turned our usual trip into an “imaginary visit” to an art museum, calling the event “Masterpiece Makers.”

Each classroom, and even the gym, became its own little gallery. The kids rotated through different stations, each led by a teacher focusing on a specific art concept. In my room, we explored color and color mixing. At other stations, they learned how to create art using dots, how to sculpt, and even how to make a snack into a miniature sculpture before eating it! It was hands-on, bright, and full of energy.

We saved everything they made and hosted an art show for two days so families could come see the children’s creations. Despite the previous limits on how many people we could welcome inside, it was wonderful to have families back in the building. It was heartwarming to see parents and kids walking together, talking about what they’d made. Some parents even shared pictures of their children proudly standing beside their artwork.

Though it wasn’t specifically Bible-themed this year (last year we did creation), this event reminded us that God made every child creative in their own unique way. And yes—we’re already tossing around ideas for next year!
