While Matthew and Luke begin their Gospels by describing the events of Jesus birth, John begins his Gospel by describing the meaning of Jesus’ coming into the world. He is the Logos – the ultimate answer to all the great questions of life. He is the light – the source of all truth and direction. As John 1:9 states, he is “the true light which gives light to everyone.” These early chapters of John’s gospel not only explain who Jesus is and what he came to do, but they also describe the numerous ways that Jesus confronts people with who he is, and the various ways that people respond to him – both then and now. While we all need the light, we don’t always like the light. As John 3 says, “the light has come into the world, and people love darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” But while many reject the light of Jesus, others embrace him, realizing that “in him was life, and the life was the light of men.” While his light may not always be comfortable, it is always what we need, and it is always good.
