Show Choir Camp

A Week of Singing, Dancing, and Spiritual Growth

O

ur church was alive with more than 60 2nd-5th graders who love to sing and dance a couple weeks ago at Show Choir Camp: little ones from both Community Church as well as Coventry Elementary School.  Show Choir Camp gives me the opportunity to teach them about the Love of God, memorize Bible verses, eat snacks, and play games all on top of learning an entire show choir performance.

I found out a few years ago that keeping the kids busy while I have them, from 9-noon, is important. So we do just that.  Learning new songs, singing as a group, duets, solos, and learning all the choreographed motions to the songs is a lot but they are willing to do it.  Because they work hard, we also have a few scheduled breaks.  They take a few minutes and go outside (with the teen helpers) to have some friendly competition, then a snack, a drink and back to work.

Thursday I quieted the students and talked about how Jesus came to earth because He didn’t want our sin to keep us separated from Him.  We talked about Heaven and Hell and how we can go to Heaven. About thirty-five students raised their hands when I asked who would like to pray with me and ask Jesus into their heart. A few raised their hands last year or made a decision during VBS, and that's ok because they are just learning and understanding about salvation. The students then broke up into small groups and went with the adults and teen volunteers who answered questions and prayed with them.

As a teacher, I am limited while at work in what I'm allowed to say about Christianity to my students. At school, the student has to broach the subject first.  But when they are at Show Choir Camp, there are no boundaries.  The students and their families will often approach me with questions.  What a wonderful outreach for our church.

On Friday we invited all the parents and grandparents to watch our completed show, and we were blessed to have most of the kids come back on Sunday to perform in both worship services.  Thank you for all the donations and prayers.
